What does membership get you?

What would someone get for being a member of OSI?

  • A name@opensource.org eddress
  • Ability to vote on OSI issues (directors, licences, members, ...)
  • Access to internal resources? (mailing lists, strategic discussion fora, ...)
  • Other.. ?

How would this fit into a tiered model (see the membership level thread)?

I would like to see OSI become more like the IEEE of which I am a member. Initially, I think strategic discussion email lists and opensource.org email addresses would be a good start. Down the road, here are some other ideas:

1) Job boards
2) Mentoring programs
3) Open source course material.
4) Publications (print or otherwise), perhaps for a fee. Topics might include software engineering, marketing, business, etc. in an open source environment.

If OSI becomes sufficiently large, it may be possible to offer benefits to members relating to bulk purchasing power (insurance, etc). Again the IEEE is able to do this as a nonprofit industry group so there is no reason why OSI could not if you become large enough. OSI could become a great organization aimed at serving and advancing the open source community.

I'm sure that name@opesource.org would be popular... although I'm not sure would it be smart. Maybe some kind of banner for weblog is a better idea.

Yes, ability to vote on some issues would be a good thing. Although, voting rights should not be available to all members (more about that in the comment about "Membership process").
